In today’s digital age, the demand for skilled Information Technology professionals is ever-growing. However, there remains a gender disparity in the tech industry, with female representation often lagging.

In an effort to bridge the gender gap in the tech industry and empower female Information Technology graduates, Girlcode, in collaboration with Tarsus On Demand, embarked on a transformative 3-month Intro to a Python Online Bootcamp.

The primary objective of this program was to upskill female IT graduates and prepare them for the workplace through a MICT-accredited Skills Programme.

The collaboration between Girlcode and Tarsus On Demand has been instrumental in making the bootcamp a reality. Tarsus On Demand, a reputable technology solutions provider, recognised the importance of investing in diverse talent and sponsored five beneficiaries to participate in the program.

Mpho Nyembe, Program Manager at Tarsus On Demand says that being part of the program allowed Tarsus On Demand to contribute towards making it possible for these young women to access high-quality training that would otherwise have been beyond their reach and prepare them for the IT job market.

“Sponsoring the five girls was an honour from our side. We strongly believe that the program will empower the young ladies not only with technical expertise but also a determination to shatter barriers and pave the way for a more inclusive and diverse IT industry and creating a brighter future for women in Tech,” says Nyembe.

“We deeply value the transformative partnerships we forge with companies such as Tarsus On Demand. With their support, we have created opportunities for unemployed women to unlock doors to meaningful careers in the tech space and foster a society where diversity and inclusivity thrive.” Zandile Mkwanazi, CEO.

About the Bootcamp

The Girlcode’s Intro to Python Online Bootcamp set out to empower five female IT graduates as beneficiaries of this transformative initiative. These individuals were allowed to enhance their technical abilities and broaden their career prospects.

The program was designed as a MICT-accredited Skills Programme. This accreditation not only added value to the participants’ resumes but also ensured that they received industry-relevant training and knowledge.

Over a period of 3-months, the beneficiaries embarked on a comprehensive curriculum that revolved around Python – a versatile and in-demand programming language. The curriculum encompassed both theoretical knowledge and hands-on practical exercises, equipping the participants with a well-rounded understanding of Python’s applications in various real-world scenarios.

Girlcode’s skilled instructors led the beneficiaries through engaging lecture sessions that covered fundamental Python concepts, data structures, algorithms, and best coding practices. The lectures were carefully structured to accommodate learners with diverse backgrounds, ensuring that every participant could grasp the material effectively.

Mentorship is a powerful tool for fostering professional growth and personal development. Understanding this, Girlcode organised mentorship workshops where the beneficiaries had the opportunity to interact with seasoned IT professionals. These workshops provided invaluable insights, guidance, and encouragement, inspiring the participants to pursue their career goals with confidence.

Collaborative Learning Community

The Intro to Python Online Bootcamp utilised an intuitive online learning platform that allowed participants to access course materials, and lecture recordings, and collaborate with fellow learners. This virtual learning environment offered flexibility and convenience, enabling the beneficiaries to balance their studies with other commitments.

One of the program’s strengths lay in its emphasis on building a collaborative learning community. Regular group discussions, peer code reviews, and collaborative projects encouraged the beneficiaries to support and learn from one another, fostering a sense of camaraderie that extended beyond the virtual classroom.

In closing: The ultimate goal of the training program was to prepare the beneficiaries for the IT industry. Through various practical exercises and projects, the participants gained valuable hands-on experience, boosting their confidence in tackling real-world challenges.
